Havering are 2009 London Youth Games Champions
July 10 2009
Havering's young people have won the 2009 London Youth Games. In an exciting finish at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre last weekend, Havering were crowned Champions of London with 1169 points, beating neighbours Redbridge by 17 points. Last year's winners Bromley finished third with 1130 points.

Havering’s Health and Sports Development team score high

Havering’s Health and Sports Development team are celebrating after being awarded 79% in their Quest assessment, giving them accreditation in the ‘Highly Commended’ category, the second highest category and an excellent result for a first time assessment.

Quest is a National accreditation scheme which over a two day assessment visit assesses performance against ten management issues across the themes of Strategy (including Research and Community Engagement, Planning, Partnerships and Continuous Improvement), Service Delivery (Planning and Procedures, Health and Safety, Customer Relations and Marketing) and People Management.

The team’s efforts were recognised by lead member for Culture Andrew Curtin, Chief Executive Cheryl Coppell and Head of Service Simon Parkinson.

Free Outdoor Gyms

Did you know that free outdoor gyms are available for you to use in Havering’s parks? You are invited to come and take part in our free induction sessions and learn how to use the equipment under the guidance of a qualified instructor.

Induction sessions:

* Lodge Farm Park, Main Road, Romford, Friday 5th June, 10.45am - 11.45am

* Harold Wood Park, Squirrels Heath Road, Harold Wood, Friday 5th June, 12.30pm - 1.30pm

Winter Warm-Up athletics meetings

Havering Mayesbrook Athletic Club will again be holding their two Winter Warm-Up athletics meetings for all ages on Sunday 29th March commencing at 10.30 a.m. at Hornchurch Stadium, Upminster, this is a track (80m through to 600m) and jumps meeting, the second meeting will be held at the Mayesbrook Arena in Barking on Saturday 4th April commencing at 12 p.m. this is a full athletics meeting all distances and field events. Entries will be taken on the day.

Fundraising walk for hospice with a Sponsored walk

Come and enjoy the Essex countryside and support a sponsored walk in aid of Saint Francis Hospice, on Sunday 7th September 2008 which provides free specialist care to adults from Havering, Brentwood, Barking & Dagenham and Redbridge affected by any life limiting illness. The Hornchurch & Upminster Rotary Club has organised the 15th annual walk for the hospice to take place from 9am at Belhus Woods Country Park, Aveley. The walk is on paths through woodland and by lakes and there is an abundance of wildlife and fine views in the country park, which was once part of the Belhus estate that dates back to the mid 14th century. Entry is £5 in advance or on the day and to book a place and obtain sponsorship forms please call Brian Taffs on 01708 250855.

Fundraising walk for hospice with a Halloween Howler

Make Halloween a fun event for the family by taking part in the Halloween Howler sponsored walk for Saint Francis Hospice, on Friday 31 October 2008 which provides free specialist care to all adults affected by any life limiting illness living in Havering, Brentwood, Barking & Dagenham and Redbridge. The event starts at 6pm at the Thames Chase Forest Centre, Upminster, and the walk comprises of one mile circuits, suitable for pushchairs and fully marked. Tee up for charity golf day

Golfers are being invited to tee up and support a fundraising golf day in aid of Saint Francis Hospice. The golf day, on Wednesday 1st October 2008 which is being sponsored by hospice supporter Barry Hearn's company Matchroom Sports, is taking place at Maylands Golf and Country Club in Harold Park and the hospice has places available for individuals and teams of four. We would also welcome sponsorship from businesses and organisations. Places cost £80 per person, which includes breakfast, 18 hole round of golf, three-course presentation dinner with raffle and auction. Information for Cultural Olympiad Brochure
